Instead of using drywall joint compound to embed the tape in the cement board you should use thin set mortar. Cement backer board is mainly used as a sub surface for tiling. The quality of the board is a little tougher than regular drywall but some construction pros find it easier to cut. This drywall features a special paperless backing and an additional coating to prevent mold and moisture. Whether code in your area demands it or not you should never use any standard drywall in a bathroom.

Be cognizant that cement board requires a moisture barrier behind it which makes the installation process longer than moisture resistant drywall. This type of waterproof drywall is designed for wet areas such as showers and bathtub surrounds.
